Irene Zundel
Irene Zundel est née à Mexico en 1958. Elle a étudié le graphisme au Philadelphia College of Art. Dans les années 1990, elle rejoint l’atelier d’Enrique Jolly, où elle commence à expérimenter la sculpture figurative : c’est alors qu’elle découvre que l’abstraction est le langage dont elle a besoin pour exprimer ses préoccupations et son monde intérieur. Elle a également étudié la photographie, la peinture et l’art-thérapie. Depuis 1997, elle expose individuellement et collectivement dans des galeries, des maisons de la culture et d’autres espaces au Mexique et à l’étranger. Son exposition Más allá de lo Aparente (Au-delà de la réalité) a fait le tour de plusieurs pays pendant deux ans, notamment en Italie, en Espagne, en Allemagne, en Turquie, aux Émirats arabes unis et en France. La plupart de ses œuvres ont été réalisées en plexiglas, un matériau qui a renforcé leur valeur créative et qui a permis à l’artiste d’évoluer et d’explorer d’innombrables illusions d’optique. Son travail reflète l’évolution de sa trajectoire de vie : elle a commencé par le classique, le massif et le minimalisme. Plus tard, son travail est devenu plus audacieux, volatile, moins enraciné dans la terre.
The environment
The project prepared by Mexican artist Irene Zundel, presented at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Montreal/ESPACIO MÉXICO in collaboration with the Art Souterrain 2024 edition, which focuses on Art and Ecology, consists of two indoor installations:
Cascade of Consciousness and Infinite Progression.
Through this exhibition, the artist seeks to address environmental issues from different angles. These works encapsulate two fundamental aspects of the human condition and offer powerful reflections on our role in transforming and preserving the environment. The two works complement and oppose each other, generating an intelligent dialogue on the duality of the human condition. While The Cascade of Consciousness encourages us to recognize the challenges we face and confronts us with the harsh reality of our environment’s destruction, Infinite Progression invites us to look beyond the difficulties and focus on the potential for growth and transformation, both individually and collectively. Both works remind us that, despite adversity, we have the capacity to create change and encourage us to reflect on our role in building a sustainable, harmonious and equitable future.
The Mexican Cultural Institute of Montreal/Espacio México opened its doors in 2000. It is a unique venue that highlights the cultural presence of Mexico in Montreal.
